Set high on a cliff-top, against the stunning backdrop of the Rhaetian Alps, there stands a 13th-century fortress that constitutes a rare example of a “twin” castle – two mirror-image buildings united by a section of wall.

Opening hours

Grumello Castle is open to the public every day (except non-public-holiday Mondays), at the following times:

• from March to September: 10 am – 6 pm
• from October to January: 10 am – 5 pm

Last admission: 30 minutes before closure.

February closed.


Free entry. To support FAI, a contribution of € 2 per adults and € 1 per child (6-18 years) would be gratefully received.

How to get there

By car

From Lecco, take the SS 36 highway (linking Lake Como and the Splügen Pass) heading towards the province of Sondrio. Proceed on Via Strada Statale 38 dello Stelvio and take the Sondrio Via Vanoni exit, then follow the signs for “Castel Grumello” on Via Sant’Antonio in Montagna in Valtellina.

Access to the Castle has a long and steep staircase with uneven ground.

The dirt roads inside the archaeological area have unevenness and steps.
